# Room layout planner

Draw your room, add furniture and try it in different places before you lift anything. Clearance zones, overlaps and the door's swing are checked as you go.

## How to plan a small room

Measure the room wall to wall, then the door: which wall it is on, how far it is from the corner, its width and which way it opens. Add windows so you don't block them. Pick furniture from the list, change the sizes to your own pieces, and drag them into place.

Shaded strips show the space each piece needs: green when it is clear, red when a wall or another piece is in the way. A bed needs its foot and at least one side clear; a dining table needs one long side free for chairs. Turn on *Plan for a wheelchair user* to use the wider accessible figures and look for a clear turning circle.

**Buying flat-pack from a shop you found through an ad?** Before you pay, look up the shop's web address with WebTraceCheck's [free DNS and domain lookup](https://webtracecheck.com/dns-lookup) to see how long the domain has existed. A very new domain isn't proof of anything, but it is a reason to read reviews and pay with buyer protection.

If you would rather not open an unfamiliar link on your own laptop, [WebTraceCheck's disposable cloud browser](https://webtracecheck.com/) opens it on an isolated desktop that is deleted when you finish.

- Bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers zones (750 mm, or 1000 mm for a wheelchair user) and the furniture sizes marked in the list: [Approved Document M, Volume 1](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/540330/BR_PDF_AD_M1_2015_with_2016_amendments_V3.pdf), paragraphs 2.25, 3.32b and 3.35e and the Appendix D furniture schedule; the 750 mm route in front of furniture also follows the [Universal Design Guidelines for Homes in Ireland](https://universaldesign.ie/uploads/publications/Section-3-Spaces-for-Living_2024-09-24-123002_xwpl.pdf), Section 3.
- Chair space behind a desk or table (32 in, or 36 in for a wheelchair user) and the 42 in kitchen aisle: [NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines](https://kb.nkba.org/uploads/2022/05/Kitchen-Planning-Guidelines.pdf), Guidelines 6 and 8. NKBA writes the seating figure for kitchen seating; the planner uses it for desks too.

- Legroom in front of a sofa (14 in, 36 cm) is a common rule of thumb, not a standard. US bed sizes are mattress sizes.

## Questions

**Is my plan uploaded anywhere?**

No. The plan is saved only in this browser's local storage, so it is still there next time on this device. Save a PNG to keep a copy or share it.

**Can I turn furniture to any angle?**

Pieces turn in quarter turns, which covers furniture standing square to the walls. A piece set at an angle in a corner takes more floor than it looks, so plan it square first.

**Why is a zone red when nothing is there?**

The zone runs into a wall: the piece is closer to the wall than the space it needs. Move it away from the wall, or turn it so the side that needs the space faces into the room.
